A true story for you. Two weeks ago after golf we stopped at Augustine 1812. At the inside bar was a couple, obvious regulars. They were eves dropping on our conversation about TV growing in the south. They had the inside track and were anxious to share their knowledge. Fact (according to them) the Family has purchased the Coleman Prison and not only purchased it but is going to build the government another prison to replace it. These same people had overlooked a warning to us the very establishment we were in was going to close the doors the next week.

This rumor was discussed among TV reps, TOTV, over 2 years ago, that TV was buying the over crowded outdated Coleman Prison, and new prison was to be built ( no disclosure on where) to better accommodate the growing number of inmates

NO, It's Not moving. With all the new schools there, the schools plan on making use of it. The start of each new semester, they plan of taking all the students through the prison. They see it as a motivation to do their best in school, so they don't end up there. Any troublemakers, get a special tour as added incentive. If they're bad enough, they get to spend a day in the hold. I heard there's legislation coming. Honest truth. I heard this from a very reliable source the other night at City Fire.

Seriously????
It’s a federal prison - if it were to be sold, it would have to go through congress and bureau of prisons - pretty sure that could not be kept quiet.
According to Wikipedia, it 1600 acres.
Building a new prison would take years - maybe a decade.
That prison is huge, with a lot of cement walls and cement buildings - it would cost a fortune to knock down.

Rumors are typically not fact but "wannabees" who think they know more about the topic at hand. I worked for The Bureau of Prisons for 25 years, as did my husband.
Points: 1. there are thousands of inmates at Coleman, so where do they put the inmates? All BOP facilities are overcrowded so moving them is not an option.
2. So why not build another prison for Coleman inmates? It would take YEARS (I mean YEARS) to find and build another facility.
3. Coleman has 5 different facilities and is the largest federal prison in the system. It cost millions of dollars to complete. It would take $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ to tear it all down.
4. Think of all the staff (2,000+) used to fulfil the mission of the BOP at Coleman. Staff are already working overtime due to staff shortages. This is their livelihood...where would they put ALL staff, especially those who are local and plan to work their entire career at Coleman? They didn't do anything to warrant termination. The BOP would not do that...they take care of their staff (its no picnic). Generally 2 big "no-nos" to lead to firing a staff member would be sleeping with an inmate (Yuck..its also a federal offense which can lead one not only termination but federal time and becoming a felon) and bringing drugs into the institution.
So I say all this to debunk the rumor that TV is buying Coleman. They are NOT, atleast with my train of thought. But again, it makes no sense.

Nextdoor is a site for news, humor and items of interest. If you are someone who can't tell the difference between humor and news you need to shy away from sites like this. Jokes about a Federal Prison are just attempts at humor. If you thought the prison was moving I've got an expensive bridge I'd like to sell you. No, seriously you should not be giving me your credit card number.

Coleman opened in 2001, (United States Penitentiary, Coleman - Wikipedia (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_Penitentiary,_Coleman)) is a new, modern prison. For sale? It may be a package deal, one prison plus oceanfront property in Kansas.
Everyone, get a grip on rumors. In 2012 there was page after page of chatter on this website about the new 100 store indoor mall, with Macy's as an anchor, that was definitely coming here. They knew it was true because a neighbor met a guy in a bar that met a guy playing golf that knew someone that heard from a friend and, well you get the picture. The posts even had the name of the mall - it was to be Antrim Dells.
Name sound familiar? As you leave Brownwood and cross Buena Vista look at the villa complex in front of you. The name is Antrim Dells.
Coleman is a new, multi-billion-dollar facility that is not going away.

Was driving last sunday up I 75….around bushnell, i looked to my right and i see a huge building going up…i thought perhaps a distribution center. Then I saw a sign…Commercial Properties of the Villages….thought to myself, they are down here now!
Today, gassing up at the circle K at lake deaton, i saw a prison guard in uniform filling his car. Asked him, i heard a rumor that the prison will be closing…he said..in year or two.
So..is it a rumor or not?

Coleman Federal Complex hold 7,120 inmates and employs 1300. It is four units from low to medium security. There is no mention on any site of this facility closing except the rumor mills.
In 2021 the state of Florida was considering closing four state prisons. Perhaps this is where this rumor originated from.
