As I recall, my wife gets hers done at a nail salon, you would just skip the polish....

Frankly I would choose a podiatrist because one KNOWS for sure they keep their tools sanitized especially if one's feet or toes may have other issues which is common with many of us older folks plus medicare covers it.

last visit to the podiatrist wife was told that due to shortage of help, they're not doing nails anymore
they gave her the names of 3 podiatrists outside the villages (which we no longer have)....but I agree...just as good going to a nail salon, and cheaper too

Wife and I have been getting pedicures at the same salon for the last 6 years and, so far, have survived. Also, I notice more men are in the chairs.....guess their wives stopped trimming their nails. :)

Cheaper? My NJ Podiatrist does not charge for the clipping/foot inspection - it is covered by my Medicare...only pay my ins co-pay. My FL Podiatrist operated the same way - before he passed away.

I know this sounds crazy, but for about the last 15 years I have been trimming my (sometimes) ingrown and always thick toenails with a Dremel (this is a rotary tool). I use a very small bit with a grinding type of a tip. I'm not advising anyone to do this, as I am a down to the bone do-it-yourselfer. And yes, you must be very careful. I found it's easier for me to do it this way rather than taking the time to make an appointment and go to a podiatrist. ...Whatever works!

If, justified, I think Medicare will cover it. Some seem to think a long as it doesn't cost ME I should take advantage, If, there is an issue of thick nails, weak hands or whatever, a simple nail file is simple, easy and done, It takes less time than my typing this post.

That is what my podiatrist uses. If, I recall they use a cone shaped, perhaps a diamond bit. I have suggested a nail file. A dremel tool may get some into trouble.

It's only covered by Medicare if you meet certain guidelines. Diabetes, Poor Circulation, Dialysis, etc...

You can actually buy real PODIATRY DREMEL TIPS on (where else) Amazon. Just have to make sure your Dremel has a speed control. :D

It's only covered by Medicare if you meet certain guidelines. Diabetes, Poor Circulation, Dialysis, etc... I have none of those and it's been covered for probably all my adult life between private insurance and Medicare and Medicare advantage. Including what you wrote as long as you have any sign of just about anything (curved nails, fungus, inflamed cuticle or even athletes foot) it's covered as part of general foot treatment. If one's doctor says no, look elsewhere. Just like dermatologists. If you know what to ask for they will remove anything that is even only cosmetic.

Sure, you know the Medicare rules.. I haven't a clue, even though I've been practicing Podiatry for 36 over years...

The answers here aren't helpful. IF the OP has some issues ie. diabetes, neuropathy etc. he/she truly needs a podiatrist to do this, NOT a do-it-yourself. As an aside---I saw on Next Door that Tri-County, at the moment isn't offering this as they don't have enough staff. In fact they were calling patients and cancelling app'ts. I can't help the OP so would be with them in wondering who could be called.

If you are enrolled in traditional Medicare and you are diabetic or taking blood thinner medications, Medicare covers toenail trimming at my podiatrist. My podiatrist is Shannon Floyd (352-633-8230) office location is 11834 CR 101 (near The Villages High School)

If you are a member of The Village Health you can see Dr.Wrobel who is a podiatrist. We have been seeing him for several years and are pleased with the results.

I second the vote for pedicure. I get great attention and Guys can skip the polish. Foot rub and calf massage does wonders for the circulation. Cost about $26
I save my need for a doctor to attend health matters

The Podiatry practice I have gone to for years, called me about a month ago to announce they were no longer doing my diabetic foot care/nail care. This was due to inability to get help. My niece in NJ is a Podiatrist. When I told her this she was shocked. She stated that
the doctor certainly could do the filing etc after cutting the nails. That is something I have noticed here in Florida. They have a lot of ancillary staff do care on patients that otherwise might be done by a doctor.

I've heard of a few practices starting to hire "technicians", but I didn't know it had become widespread...
