Would be nice if The Villages did something like this for our ID. Imagine not having to bring your physical ID for pool, golf, rec centers, etc.

The Villages announced they are working on it. It was in one of their videos last summer.
I think they said it will be part of the Villages App

Here's more info on Florida Smart ID:

Florida Smart ID - Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles (https://www.flhsmv.gov/FloridaSmartID/)

The Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles (FLHSMV) is committed to modernizing nearly every aspect of what we do and how customers access our services.

As part of that sustained commitment, the state of Florida is stepping into the future and developing an intuitive mobile driver license – Florida Smart ID.

The Florida Smart ID app is a secure version of your driver license, which can be downloaded on your smart device when launched.

It is not simply a photo of your license. When used with an associated Florida Smart ID Verifier, customers can provide a safe, trusted and contactless proof of identity or age.

And nothing would stop you from doing that. But for those who always carry their phones but sometimes forget to bring their wallets or purses to the pool, the addition of a digital Villager ID would be very helpful.

Wrong I bet it would only be a short period of time before they figure out how cost effective it would be to not issue any kind of ID and have them entered in your phone only , I love my phone but don’t carry it when I’m walking ,biking or running and if I make stops after gym I’m in exercise clothes and don’t want to carry it in those small pockets ,when going into stores , and no I’m not interested in checking prices on my phone as I stop for an item in grocery store .

An argument could be made that walking, biking, or running might be precisely the time you *should* carry a phone in case of an emergency. But regardless, neither a Villager ID nor a Florida license is required for any of those activities or when shopping.

Not being sure which ID you are referring to when you say "they* would figure out a digital version is more cost effective, I wouldn't worry too much about that. First, while both have been discussed neither have been implemented yet. Second, it is unlikely that the other 49 states would agree to accept the FL digital ID any time soon. Third, even FL would recognize that you cannot rely on digital IDs today; you can accept them but you would need to continue to accept the physical form. Fourth, as far as I can tell the physical Villager ID does not expire so as long as you have one now you would not need the digital version if it ever comes to pass.

Well I guess I got a. D from the teacher for my post as I was speaking in general and about the possibilities of cost effectiveness being realized by putting things on phones instead of print and if you walked bike or ran you would know that sometime you need to use the bathrooms at centers or show an I’d once in awhile in a store not very often but it’s happened with credit card , also at movie theaters here , also buying gift cards etc could go on but what’s the point by the way I’m going out now to run 3 miles and no I won’t be carrying my phone y the way I haven’t worried about any thing since I retired 23 years ago on the 12th of this month at 60 except missing a plane takeoff

Bill Gates was supposed to have smuggled micro chips into all the vaccinated, so we could just be tracked and scanned where ever we were.
Why have another system?

Silly bird, The Villages is not going to stop issuing physical cards, just like the state of Florida is not going to stop issuing physical cards. Just like the credit card companies haven't stopped issuing cards despite Apple Pay. Just like we have physical and digital vaccine cards.

Speaking of Village IDs, I lost mine last week and I couldnt believe how fast and easy it was to get a replacement. I expected a long process with paperwork and silly questions. Went to the village office at Sumter next to Starbucks and was out in 15 minutes ($15 cost). People there were so nice and the new card was usable the next morning. Had some golf shop credit balance on the card ( which is how I pay for TV's course green fees) which got transferred automatically to the new card. The four-digit pin remained the same. My tee time at Glenview was still valid when I logged on to TV's online tee time system. Met some nice people at TV office, almost glad that I lost it! Well almost.

As far as getting rid of physical cards and using a smart phone ap, that would mean that I'd have to show my smart phone at both the pro shop and then the starter(like one does with their ID). I lost my ID somewhere from the pro shop to the starter. I would rather lose my ID card than lose my phone.

Why not just embed ID like they do pets? Or tattoo? :icon_wink:Actually all you have to is give you ID number there scanner will bring up you picture. But, some too lazy to enter the number and demand ID.

Make sure it will work with the Apple Wallet! Much easier to access than inside a third part app.

Perhaps we will live to see just that, won't need your gate card because YOU will be scanned, my understanding is that in China you need to have a cel phone to travel, the government keeps track of you,, welcome to 1984

Actually I would like this if it put a lock on pool gates. Too many non-Villagers sneak in and use our pools. When the Rec person comes by (at specific times) they make sure they are in the water so they don’t have to show ID.

Laughing. I never forget my wallet—if it’s not in my pocket, I don’t feel quite dressed—but the phone only rings a couple times a week, so I rarely remember to take it.

What we need is a little implantable chip like lots of pets have. Cops, stores, guardhouses, hospitals, TSA agents at airports, etc., would hold a scanner to our arm and see our driver’s license, ID, criminal record, medical record, DNR, power of attorney, who to call, pets that need to be cared for in an emergency, credit cards, etc. then if you left your wallet at home when you went to the pool, you could be arrested or have a medical emergency without a problem. If you can’t remember where you live, you can be taken to the nearest animal shelter or returned to your owner! (Joking)

And while the state is getting so new-fangled, why not have an official vaccination certificate on our phone? After all, 90% of the residents of The Villages have been vaccinated, I read.

HOWEVER: If you click on the web site given above and read the information, you may notice this sentence at the bottom of the page: “It does not replace the physical driver license, which will still need to be carried when operating a motor vehicle.” So if you drive to the pool, you will still need your wallet. But maybe this will be a valid ID for voting.

The Florida Smart ID page (https://www.flhsmv.gov/FloridaSmartID/) indicates that the app is not available yet.

To gather important feedback from the public and partners, the department is currently hosting Florida Smart ID pilot events with limited participants from across the state,

EDIT: Apparently the website is out of date and the app is available, at least for iphones.

There are people that don’t carry their phone with them everywhere? Why would anyone not take their phone with them?

I find it extremely liberating not to be tethered to an electronic device all the time. So many people are so addicted to their phones they often fail to see anything else going on around them. I only carry my phone if I am expecting a very important phone call and I will be in a situation where I can leave on the ringer and answer the phone without being rude to those around me. That is a rare occasion, there is very little that is so important to me that I need to be “on call”, I’m retired. And don’t get me going on the jerks that bring their phones golfing and leave their ringers on and pick up every call. The only reason I would ever bring my phone golfing would be to check the radar to see if lightning is approaching.

If I have my phone with me, which is most of the time, I seldom have the ring mode on. I have on a few occasions forgotten to turn it off and while having a conversation with someone, it has rung. Unless I am expecting an important call, I don't answer it. Usually the person I am speaking with will ask "Well, aren't you going to answer it?", and I'll say "No, I'm talking to you right now. They can leave a message." Seems like simple courtesy to me.

Don't see much advantage to having digital ID at this time because even with Florida Digital ID you are still required to carry a physical driver's license.

Will I still need to carry my traditional physical Florida driver license?
Yes. Florida law currently requires you to also carry the traditional physical Florida driver license.
