We have natural gas at Mallory, hubby is thinking of a gas grill or propane BBQ but can’t figure where to store the propane tank safely when we are not here. Is a gas line worth it? What might it cost to instal and by who?

We store ours on the lanai, just in case of a leak, this is the most ventilated area in our house.

Absolutely worth it unless you like running out of gas in the middle of your BBQ.

We had natural gas grill up north, used it all year long (after shoveling snow off the deck). Well worth it, your food will cook at a constant temperature.

Any competent plumber should be able to run a natural gas line. Just make sure you have a shut-off valve near the grill and that you buy a grill with the proper natural gas regulator. They are different from propane grills...
Although you can modify your current propane grill to accept natural gas...

Why not just leave it in the grill (not inside the birdcage, that outside?) Or do you store the grill inside? If you can remove the tank and store it outside about anywhere. ( like stored when you brought it or where it filled at, outside. I sure got big birdcage to store it in corner?
I don’t barbecue enough to warrant gas line installation.

I would have shutoff one at the meter also.

Propane is more energy-efficient and considered to be a green fuel, while natural gas is not. Natural gas is delivered to houses via gas pipelines. Propane is delivered in propane tanks. Lastly, propane is heavier than air, but natural gas is lighter. Source Google.

Make sure your grill is designed for dual fuel and able to run off of natural gas. Not every propane grill can use natural gas, so be sure to consult your owner's manual
Source; Google I take you’re gas’s grill designed to run both?

I have two appliances outside my lanai. Both are fed by natural gas. No more lugging tanks around, needing a spare, running out at inopportune times. Use both of them extensively, often both for same meal

Never used the exchange tanks before but in Florida we have 3 tanks. One on our fire pit, one on our grill and one on our Blackstone. Plenty of overlap if one tank runs out. Since just about every store has an exchange cabinet, it is easy. We just put it on the golf cart in go. Have not seen anywhere to refill a tank in the Villages.

Propane tanks are extremely safe any shaded with air circulating spot is safe. Although maybe hubby is just tired of dealing with propane lol

In my opinion gas line not worth it. If you are snowbirds and you leave for a series of months, just empty your tank before you leave. Propane is cheap! Then just refill it when you come back! Ace hardware does refills

Both fuels are clean burning and used in high quality grills. We had a natural gas piped grill up north and used it constantly. Much cheaper than propane at our location. I loved not having to go for propane every couple of weeks. I also didn’t have to store tanks any more. Most were rusting outside near the pool. Not so good.

I needed a gas line ran 25 feet. I got 5 quotes. The least was 900.00 and the most was 2450.00. The job was exactly the same no matter who did it. I went with Torri plumbing. They were the best.

In my house, the natural gas header is directly above the staircase to the attic in the garage. I have one unused port on the header. I've been thinking about it as well. It is simple enough to run flex line across the attic to the lanai and put on a shut-off the same as the other installed lines. There are flex hookup lines from there to your appliances. The install is no different than hooking up a water heater or stove.
here is a 70' yellow flex for under $100

I keep my propane tank on the grill in the bird cage, good ventilation. When away for a extended time I cover the grill with a small tarp from home depot. I would not leave the tank in direct sun light or in the garage or a enclosed lanai. The tank has a pressure relief valve. If the pressure in the tank goes too high the relief valve will allow the tank to vent.

Is there gas in the street? TECO would run the gas line to the house. Kiley and Sons then ran the line to my grill and into the kitchen for a gas stove. If you then decide you want a generator in the future, you'd already have the gas available.

We had a gas line to our grill in the home we just sold. It was not cheap but worth every penny if you grill a lot. Grill cooks hotter. Make sure the gas line from the house is large enough to handle the grill.

Another thought about connecting to a natural gas line. Don't walk away from the grill and forget it's on. With a propane tank you will only empty the tank. Connected to a natural gas line you will have a endless supply of natural gas.

Correct, and exchange tanks are only filled to 15 pounds rather than 20, so they run out faster and the propane costs a LOT more when exchanging the tank.
I only use exchange tanks when the certification date on the tank runs out and they won't refill them any more. I didn't notice here, but by my MD house the Sam's Club has a propane vending machine that exchanges the tanks for $14.

Ask yourself a question. When was the last time you heard of a BBQ propane tank exploding or even venting? The fact is you haven't because it isn't something that happens unless there is an intense heat source very close to the tank.
All a hot propane tank will do is raise the internal tank pressure. The tank will start venting when it hits about 375 PSI. Normal pressure on full tank on a 100 degree day is about 175psi. Even at 125 degrees in Death Valley, it probably won't start venting. No amount of sunlight in Florida is going to cause that.

Ace Hardware in Wildwood also fill propane tanks. They only charge for what they put in the tank which is usually much cheaper than the exchange price.

There is a difference between propane gas and natural gas. You will need to have your grill specific to the type of gas you will be using. There are kits available to retro fit to natural gas. Had natural gas off house line up north. Propane, which is what most grill sold at retail stores are, down south.

Worse case scenario, I suppose. but the tank weighs more than most of the lanai furniture, potted plants, etc.
If a hurricane hits TV in my lifetime, unlikely as it may be, I'll worry about it then. Everything is a missile in those kind of high winds....
And I won't be hanging outside on my lanai if it is windy enough to blow around a propane tank!

One of the best things I ever did. No more lugging heavy propane tanks to Ace Hardware, waiting to get them filled, paying $20+, then lugging even heavier tanks back thru the house and crawling under the grill to hook a new one up.
A plumber with the proper gas license can do it pretty quickly. I can’t remember the cost, but it was worth every penny. And none of your worries about storing tanks while you’re gone.

That's right. We ordered a NG model that rolls into our outdoor kitchen counter. Plumbed a black pipe with inside shut-off from our gas stove about 4 feet from the grill outside through our CBS wall. Buy a "real" stainless steel grill. Over 18 years now and the only parts that need replacing is the flame diverters which are easily replaced. Buying a new grill? Bring a magnet with you. If it sticks to the "stainless" reject that model. It's not "real stainless".

Although you can modify your current propane grill to accept natural gas... It is a felony in most states for a unlicensed plumber to run piping from their home natural gas line to a gas appliance outside or inside their home without getting permission from their local building Dept. or gas utility company which will inspect while it is being pressured with air only for leaks and the system to be code compliant. Please don't think of doing any gas piping because I have seen what has happened to people and property after their homes have been destroyed because of gas leaks. I am a licensed NYC master plumber for 50 year. Never! Never! attempt to do any natural gas piping.

Not sure of the felony bit, but not worth looking up.
Any licensed plumber can certify the work after it is done. They'll pressure test in some cases, although small additions to the gas system only need to have a leak detector put on the fittings. That's the Florida statutes, anyway.

There is always a trade off, running out of gas or a possible injury to ones self or the car or the golf cart.
Ace is the place for refills.
If this is the forever home then I would run the gas line. I would for sure shop around , look for a contractor OUTSIDE of the bubble.
I struggle with the quality of workmanship for the three times the price they charge. Just saying

I have two propane tanks. I keep one on the grill and attached and the other behind it on lanai. In the past I've stored the spare in the garage.
I have heard stories about natural gas line leaking and houses blowing up but never heard anything having to do with a propane tank.

Natural gas hole openings are larger than propane due to higher line (tank) pressure of propane?

Propane has twice the energy content than natural gas so you need to flow twice the amount for the same heat output. Propane is also higher pressure than natural gas.
