I did a search and may be using the wrong keywords, so i apologize in advance if this has been asked before.
We took our brand new 4 seater club car out and floored, it was doing 19 mph according to my speed app on the phone. We were regularly being driven up on and/or being left behind. Are we extraordinarily slow? I thought 20 was the max speed on the multimodals?

I had to sign something yesterday at The Villages Golf Cart that said I knew my cart goes over 20mph. I declined to sign it. I don't speed anyway but after waiting a while for the appointment I would think that repairing the cart would be the first priority. I know it was for me. Telling the person who checked me in to pull their mask over their schnozzola was actually the top priority.
20mph is fast enough after you've witnessed a speed-related cart rollover. It's not good.

2 for 0mph is the maximum speed for a golf cart according to federal law. If you drive a cart that can go over 20mph on a public road, you can be ticketed for driving an unregistered motor vehicle. Around $250 plus a trip to court, where they will make you take the cart to a mechanic to certify that it can go no faster than 20mph. It doesn't matter if you were driving below 20mph or not. If you get into an accident, your fault or not, you cart may be checked by the police to see if has been tampered with to go above 20mph. And you cart insurance will not cover you if it can.
All that being said, their are loads of unregistered motor vehicles in The Villages. Most are gas carts with their governors altered. There are some "street legal" electric carts around, which are licensed and insured with added equipment. My cart can not go faster than 20mph, but I constantly get passed by idiots that come up to my bumper from nowhere and pass me going 2 or 3 mph faster.

Our golf cart can hit 27 mph. For us we just enjoy cruising around 18 mph. Honestly now what's the hurry? We are retired and have all the time in the world.

Thanks! That's what i thought, but I didnt want to be the one holding up traffic if our new cart was set to slow for some reason :)
Hubby keeps wanting to pull over to let them pass, but I want to just keep on keepin on if I am doing the speed limit or very close.

Hubby keeps wanting to pull over to let them pass, but I want to just keep on keepin on if I am doing the speed limit or very close. While it is DEFINITELY NOT LEGAL I rarely (yes, of course there are some) see a golf cart traveling at under 20mph where I travel unless they are in the process of STOPPING :) or going up a steep hill. I'd bet 1/2 dozen donuts that probably 80% of the PRIVATELY OWNED not rented carts around here can do more than 20. Even if they are set to MAX of 22 it's just as illegal as if it was set to go 28. My "cart" has a real speedometer so it is easy to fairly accurately be able to tell speed. While there probably aren't more than a few tickets issued for non-reg vehicles (ie. golf carts CAPABLE of EXCEEDING 20mph) every year they are quite expensive.

If you're on a MMP (Multi-modal path) the police will not give a golf cart driver a ticket for speeding because it is private property. However, they will and can give you an open container ticket if you have an open container of alcohol while operating a golf cart on the MMP. The police have also been known to ticket the driver in a golf cart sitting parked at the squares while the driver has the engine turned off and is only listening to music. If you decide to go the square and have a alcoholic drink take a chair and sit next to the cart and not in the cart, you'll be OK.
If you're driving in a cart on a public street such as Hillsborough, Pinellas or St. Charles for example in the golf lane, they will give you ticket if your cart is going more than 20mph. It's not a speeding ticket, Florida law states the definition of a golf cart is
"Golf cart” means a motor vehicle that is designed and manufactured for operation on a golf course for sporting or recreational purposes and that is not capable of exceeding speeds of 20 miles per hour.
Because of the way the definition of a golf cart is written, if you are exceeding the speed limit of 20, they don't consider you a golf cart, but a LSV (low speed vehicle) in layman's terms, a street legal cart. In which case you need a Florida license tag, full auto insurance, windshield wipers, seat belts and one piece windshield. Since you're operating as LSV but are NOT licensed as such, you'll receive the unregistered vehicle ticket. Also, you do not need to be going more than 20mph, if your cart is simply capable of going more than 20, such as 27 mph mentioned by a poster, that is an illegal cart and be ticketed even if you're not speeding.
From past violators who have posted on TOTV, we've learned that you must appear in County Court in Bushnell and need to bring a letter from a certified mechanic that cart has been dialed back to the appropriate speed for a golf cart. You probably will pay a fine and court costs that are about $450 and if by chance you show up wearing shorts in court, you'll stay until the last case of the day, about 4:30 to be heard.
Holy cow!! You’re not speaking from personal experience, are you? LOL.

Both our carts are set to not exceed the maximum speed limit and we often get passed by other carts like we are crawling along. That being said, getting passed is rarely very dangerous. What is dangerous are carts going 10 - 15 MPH, causing long backups behind them, resulting in people getting frustrated and taking unnecessary risks to get by the logjam. Why can’t everyone just drive along at the legal speed limit?

I have two related questions:
(1) If you go faster than 10 mph on the Lake Sumter bridge going over to the square what, if anything, might the penalty be? Is there someone who might give you a ticket? Or is it just an issue that might affect an insurance claim if you were in an accident? [We were tail gaited on our way back from dinner tonight by someone who seemed very unhappy that we were driving the speed limit.]
(2) If you are driving in the golf cart lane on, say, Morse Blvd. going north and there is a slowpoke in front of you (SLOW by your standards, which could mean "below 20" or maybe just "going 20 but that isn't fast enough for me") are you allowed to temporarily move into the car lane in order to pass the slower moving cart?
Thx.

We have 2 carts, one came set at 21 and a used on we got was set at about 23. I have not touched them but they can be adjusted. Many have adjusted to go about 25 and some to over 30. It can get crazy if people start flying by you with carts coming the other way. I am fine at 21 knowing it is 1 over but I do not pass or run up on slower carts.

There is no speed limit on the multi-modal paths. But the speed limit on public roads is 19.9 mph for golf carts that are not licensed as LSV's. Of course driving a golf cart at 20 mph with other golf carts blowing past you is really no different than driving in your auto on Buena Vista or Morse at the 35 mph posted speed limit. The majority of other autos are going to blow past you as well.

Except you’re willing to violate safety regulations enacted to protect the public because some people exercise bad judgement. Sounds like you might be one of them. Drivers following law should be applauded, not denigrated. And you should leave earlier if you need to speed to get somewhere on time.

It appears the owner of the multi-modal paths has set a speed limit. In the “Golf Cart Rules of The Road and Safety Tips” rule 5 states “Speed not to exceed 20mph”. - districtgov.org
Surprisedly, your need for speedmight not help you in court if you cause an accident. As the Golf Cart Rules suggests, “Slow Down and Enjoy The Ride!”

You are correct. 20 MPH is the maximum LEGAL speed allowed for golf carts in The Villages. That being said, there are far more carts that can exceed that speed than you can imagine. I get passed all the time by carts on the street and MMPs. There used to be that Sheriffs would have speed traps for carts and it was expensive get a ticket for speeding. Around $800.00. Some carts have License plates and can go up to 25 MPH, but there are special requirements for them to be registered, including windshield wipers.

If drivers of carts just use common sense there should be no issues. Why would anyone want MORE rules and regulations imposed. That is the allure of Florida. Common sense not oppression. TV is popular because of the life style. Don’t try to regulate it more then it is. Don’t NY The Villages!

Just a friendly FYI that have governors set over 20 MPH. The RPM on the Yamaha motor are not designed to go much faster than 20 MPH. Anything over 22 MPH the RPM’s are to fast and you risk damaging the motor.

When we see cart drives going over 20 mph we like to see how red their faces are, usually a sign maybe they have been drinking. Of course it depends on the time of day but sometimes when it's late afternoon and we see a red faced guy maybe he stayed too long in the bar and Ethel will be pi$$ed when he comes home late for dinner.

I don't mind being passed when going 20 MPH. It doesn't have any effect on my day. When I get behind a cart going 18 MPH or less I pass them figuring the same way. They are not affected by me passing them but I would be if I stayed behind them. What really gets me irritated is car drivers in the left lane going less than the posted speed limit and not passing anyone.

They will set it at 22mph or whatever speed however you must sign the form stating you are 'requesting' for the speed over 20mph. My cart is set at 22mph however I feeel safer for extra power going around someone who is driving under 17mph and a road hazard! There are some very impatient people who will pass 3 or more carts just to get in front of the line, so to speak! I had an older gentlemen hit the curb on the LSL bridge and fell out of his cart! Not speeding, just trying to drive!! So the setting of the speed on a cart is not the only problem!

I recently bought a cart. My loner did approx. 19mph. Yes, everyone would pass me, even my friend whom I would follow to a golf course would loose me. They would tell me, that when my new one comes in have them turn up the speed a little, they might have you sign something. When my new one came in it went about the same as the loner. I had to bring it in the following week for some things to be added that had not previously been installed. I asked if the speed could be turned up, they told me yes, but 24.5 was the max. I got the impression that there was something about not hitting 25mph. I typically cruise at about 20-22, but is nice to know that when your lagging in traffic you can pick it up a little. People will travel at what they are comfortable, just like a car, but you better know the consequences. Everybody has gone too fast at some point in their life. Even here in TV, a 20mph cart going down hill will do 24-25mph. I did not have to sign anything. What I'm more concerned with is people not cancelling their directionals, now this is an accident waiting for a place to happen. I got self canceling directionals on my cart. The best safety feature you could spend money on. I would strongly urge everyone to get these. I think they were about $250. Just think, going down a ramp, not knowing your right direction is on, but you are going straight thru. Someone coming out of the tunnel thinks you are turning right and pulls out. Ouch!

Just an observation, not an answer to your question. I ride my bike across the Sumter bridge seven days a week. My average riding speed is 10-12 mph, and I have a very accurate speedometer. I can't remember the last time a cart on the bridge did not pass me. I suspect the average speed of carts passing me is around 15 mph.

Well at least you know you’re within the speed law. I bought 2 new carts in our 8 yrs. in TV & both of them ran 20mph but if I was going down hill sometimes my cart would go 25 to 29 mph. Some people might be speeding them up themselves!

Electric club cars can only go 20 mph. Electric EZ-Go's with 10-inch tires go about 22.5 mph. Yamaha gas carts are generally raised by the owners to 22.5 mph and above. Yes these are illegal as are many of the new little electric cars, but it does not seem to be enforced.

You are absolutely correct AND if you are in an accident and they check that your governor has been adjusted to over 20 mph, you can be sued BIG TIME. I don't know why some people have to go so fast on a golf cart. You are supposed to be retired - what the heck is your hurry?
I've been in my car driving the 25 mph speed limit and then passed by a golf cart doing almost 30 mph. That's ridiculous!!!!!!

I would like to travel through life at my pace, not dictated by yours. to me. it's like the ignorant people in the left lane, dictating the speed of others, who would like to move along at their own pace, not theirs. I do not have to answer your questions about what's my hurry. I could be having an emergency, or responding to someone who is having one, or I would like to just move along quicker than you, what's my hurry is none of your nosey business......... thank you very much
That’s fine, but don’t let you’re pace put me in danger. As you stated you can’t dictate how other people travel through life. There no law against traveling in left lane, you just can’t impede traffic in left lane.

You thing that’s ridiculous I was traveling up B/V going 37 in right lane and got passed by jacked up par car golf cart cart which makes even more dangerous for roll over.

Didn't read each comment thoroughly ...but the most important thing to know if your golf cart exceeds 20 mph; is your insurance coverage. I adjusted insurance claims for over 20 years, and ran across situations where a motor type vehicle DID NOT HAVE insurance coverage. In the case where a golf cart exceeds the 20 mph limit...and should have been licensed as a motor vehicle...in 99% of the recreational policies....there would be NO INSURANCE COVERAGE for a claim on public property such as the cart path on public roads. YOU DO NOT have to be going 20mph +...it would be that the cart can exceed the 20 mph and should have been registered. This means...if you cause damage...injure someone...etc.. YOU HAVE NO LIABILITY COVERAGE and would have to pay the claims out of your savings..real property..etc... If an injury for example has a value in excess of $100,000, or $200,000 ,etc.... you better have savings to cover that, etc.. Personal financial exposure should be considered if you have a cart that exceeds 20 mph.

20 mph is more than enough for most folk to control the cart. Sadly it still wont stop those "souping them up" some up to 30 mph plus. It will not stop those who, with the wife as a passenger, run across the gate entry as the barrier goes up. You hoot and they wave.... HEY MRS it does say how little your hubby cares for you, as you are the one on the entry side who will get hit first. Are you insured !!!!! Playing chicken with cars is stupid, and cars there do have the right of way. Carts have a STOP SIGN, use it or lose your life. You have all the time in the world.

I’d be surprised if your four-seater goes 20 mph. Almost all brands are built and sold as two-seaters, then modified by the dealer to add the two additional seats. The additional structure and seats add quite a bit of weight to the vehicle resulting in slowing the top speed by about 2 mph. When the dealer “builds” the four-seater, they almost never adjust the top speed. That’s particularly true on electric carts because by speeding up the heavier four-seater, the range would be noticeably reduced.
I had exactly this same problem. After determining how infrequently we ever used the rear seats (once or twice a year when the grandkids visited) and how inexpensive the weekly rental for four-seaters was, our solution to regain more speed was to buy a two-seater with oversized radial tires. With that set up and reasonably fresh batteries, I consistently get 22.5 mph.

When I googled how fast a Club Car golf cart goes, I saw that its top speed was 19 mph, but there was a speed radar street sign on Rio Grande a couple weeks ago and I saw that my pedal to the metal was really 23 MPH. When street sign says 25 MPH max does that mean golf carts are supposed to go slower at 20 MPH or does the max speed apply to both vehicles?

Great post. My cart will go 25 mph but I only use the additional speed to get around those who poke along at 15 mph or so. If everyone drove at 20 on the straightaway, very few would feel the need to pass.

However, If the police are tracking you going down the MMP over 20 mph and then you get off the MMP (say to stop at the post office) say hello to some hefty fines!

Everybody is going to get off the MMP eventually. If the cop has radar, he's not going to bother to set it up at MMP.
Two years ago, a friend was driving South on the MMP on Morse and got nailed for speeding by the long arm of the law.

So you're saying, somewhere on Morse south of 466 where Morse has a separate MMP and not a cart lane like north of 466, the cop had radar set up or was in a moving car and came onto Villages private property and gave the cart driver a ticket for driving an unregistered vehicle for going over 20 on an MMP.
Yes sir.

I rented a home with a cart that did about the same. Trouble is on any kind of incline or even against the wind you are not doing 19.5 MPH. If I had several carts backing up behind me I would pull over and let them by under common courteous. To be behind a cart going slow when you are trying to make a tee time highly frustrating. If everyone one used common sense and let others do what they want we would not be having this discussion.

The correct speed is 19 miles per hour. The carts going faster have fiddled with them to go faster. Of course if they get in accident they will be fined a have fixed the cart to go 19 again. These carts are top heavy and do turn over easily!

Our golf cart is street
Legal, registered and insured and we do NOT have windshield wipers.Lots of LSV rules have been changed including requiring DOT windshields & wipers. Street Legal (LSV) golf carts are out of federal compliance if they don't meet those specs. That does not mean none will get registered because MOST do not go for state inspection or are already on the state "compliance" list. GEM comes to mind as an example. If you obtain a "cart" like an Atomic, while it IS Federally compliant it must be taken up to OCALA for inspection (which is kind of a joke though) to verify compliance as I have had 2 of those that have gone through that.
WHAT ARE THE REQUIRED COMPONENTS OF AN LSV VEHICLE?
All vehicles must meet all U.S. federal safety standards for low-speed vehicles (LSVs) and be equipped with:
Automotive safety windshield glass
Three-point safety belts
Turn signals
Headlights and brake lights
Horn
Mirrors
Windshield wipers
On-road tires
Parking brake
The Manufacturer’s Certification Label posted on the vehicle containing the VIN and indicating the TYPE of vehicle as a “Low Speed Vehicle”

That is NOT quite correct. The law states THEY MUST NOT BE CAPABLE OF EXCEEDING 20MPH. That means they CAN go up to 20mph but may not EXCEED that speed:
Golf carts are defined in section 320.01(22), Florida Statutes, as “a motor vehicle that is designed and manufactured for operation on a golf course for sporting or recreational purposes and that is not capable of exceeding speeds of 20 miles per hour.”

Drive down Pinellas Place on any day and see how fast some golf carts are going.
I have clocked some at 30+ mph.
People need to realize a golf cart is not very safe and they continue to drive them very aggressively.
And please stop crossing the double yellow line when going past a golf cart.
Having a head on collision is dangerous.

Whatever we can get out of our house rental cart
I can assure you it will be used.
Haven't a clue as to how fast it it goes
But by many we pass we are abused.
It is faster than many, and slower than some.
But I just floor it, and give it the gun.
It goes round corners, sometimes on two wheels,
And downhill like a rocket,
It burns the rubber but is light on gas, and very cheap on the pocket!

What's really annoying are those bicycles going 10 MPH and those insensitive pedestrians traveling at 4 MPH. Don't they know the speed limit is 20 MPH? :)
I just don't care how fast others choose to go...Just don't make your desire for speed my problem. Don't demand others live for you. Don't be a parasite.

The good news for all you speeders is that, at least in my Sumter County neighborhood, the sheriff must have given up on patrols on Morse Blvd. north of 466, as I haven't seen a deputy out there with radar in several months. So the cars and carts are going faster and faster.

I agree, golf carts should go at least 18 mph on the cart paths. When they go so slow it really effects the drivers behind them. Yes, were retired but were also on our way to somewhere. Doctor appointment, tee time, hair appointment, etc.

Pinellas Place is my regular drive and a lot of the carts have trouble keeping on their side of the white line. I frequently have to submit my tires to abuse by riding the center line reflectors.

So a golf cart passing you safely at 22 mph bothers you but a vehicle passing you at 35 mph doesn’t, really? Get a life! Just drive.
Your comment pretty much put it in a Nutshell. I don't care if a cart could go 100 mph, it's their ticket!
