Murphy Bed/ Wall Bed

I'm asking for your recommendations for Murphy Beds/Wall Bed that you have installed with which you are very happy. Please include as much detail as possible, as this is a big investment for us and we are looking for valuable information.
Also, if you have had a bad experience and regret doing it, please let us know about that.
What would you have done differently?
Our only thoughts so far would be: 1] Excellent quality wood, as opposed to particle board or veneer 2] Not so big as to swallow up the entire room.
It is going into our 3rd bedroom/den.

We looked at purchasing a Murphy bed, but found they were expensive for what you get. Our front bedroom is extremely small... We ended up with a day bed that has a trundle for when the grandkids come. It's worked for us, so may want to consider this as an option.

Kathleen Thank you for your excellent question; I, too am/was considering a Murphy bed for that third room that often looks like a catchall--office/guest room/craft room; now considering these other opinions I am rethinking. They make good points.

I think these are called 'Daisy' beds? We looked at these also, about 75% the cost of a typical Murphy bed, but my better half did not like them. My point was the wall space above this unit was useable, for shelves.

Yes, you can definitely use the wall space above. Also, it doesn’t look like it’s taking up the whole room like the Murphy Beds do.

We have 2 very nice futons that we purchased from a furniture store back home in a college town. The furniture is mission styled, sturdy, wooden and attractive with a matching end table and coffee table. All are on pads and easy to slide around and reconfigure when guests arrive. Otherwise it's an attractive sitting area. We also purchased the highest quality mattresses with springs and covered the mattresses in attractive sunbrella fabric. Now that we have moved to TV, one futon and coffee table live in the enclosed lanai and the other futon and end table are in the small 3rd bedroom. Very attractive, versatile and perfect for when the grandkids viisit. We are able to sleep 6 guests without being overcrowded with bedroom furniture when it's just us. If you do look into a futon, just don't go cheap!

Our first one we got at estate sales, we disassembled it and my husband installed in our spare room it was woodgrained. It was very nice, but he decided it wanted to get different cabinets he changed to white cabinets and desk area. We decided to get a white murphy bed. I found one at Costco was originally $2800 but got it on sale for $600 off. Be are very pleased with it, it is with mdf particle board.

We bought a cabinet bed this past spring. We bought it from Wal-Mart online and it was delivered for free. The same bed could be purchased from Home Depot as well. We paid $1200 for it and we assembled it. (Pretty easy for my husband and me) It is white plantation style --queen size. We LOVE It! It takes up very little space and is surprisingly VERY comfortable. We used it all summer with out of town visitors. Very easy to open up and put back. I am extremely happy with it. When we purchased we had a murphy bed installed in our front guest room. It has bi-fold shelves. Went with those instead of sliders because they hold more weight of books. I had the entire wall covered with bed in center and cabinets on each side. On the other wall I had a window seat and computer desk installed. I find visitors aren't that often and I can use the room for my office plus my crafts. My spouse has the other extra room for an office with a pull out sofa for needed sleeping space. We could not be happier. There is no bed taking up enormous space and rarely used. When we have visitors we clear my laptop to the kitchen that has a desk and my spouse has a roll top desk that he just closes his computer in. We too have Aero beds for overflow that we can put in our air conditioned Lani. Granted it was not cheap to have my office made up but well worth it to us. It was over $8000. We went to the Murphy bed website and they came out and gave an estimate and it was so easy to select each section you wanted. Price will vary on what you choose to add. We both spend most of our quarantine time in our offices working or crafting. It really depends on how much use YOU want in that room. I have spent years working around a large bed, mostly laying projects out on it and rarely used as a sleeping area. I would recommend a murphy bed. Cost can vary to what you want, expand or not.

Photos are the chosen designs. They are in white and match the trim and shutter in the room. The one photo is of the bi-fold doors open to pull bed down. They installed lights at the top with a touch button by the headboard.

We have Murphy beds in both of our spare bedrooms. Both are made of real wood, not composite, and can support any queen sized mattress. We have high end mattresses in both, and they are very comfortable. The problem is that anything you buy around here will be in the $2,000-$3,000 range for cheap composite, and upwards of $4,000-$5,000 for real wood.

I bought kits from WWBeds Custom Furniture | Arkansas | Murphy Beds (https://www.wwbeds.com/). They are made of real wood, and you can get them as low as $1,500-$2,000. Below is a pic of one of mine:

We have a Murphy bed and love it. Our guests have said it is very comfortable and I love that it folds out of the way completely so the room can be used for workout, sewing, crafts, cards, etc. We did get 2 side cabinets for storage and it takes up a whole wall - but so would couch/day bed/etc. with side tables. Some of it depends on how you want to use the room for every day. We also looked at the cabinet beds but didn't care for them.

We bought a queen-size cabinet bed. It can be moved anywhere and does not stay with the house if we sell.

We got a wall bed from Wall Beds Plus as well. It’s in our old house, and we are having another one installed in our new house. Love them! When the bed is up it turns into a desk, so I use it as my office. It’s going into a bedroom without a closet (den) so we’re having a cabinet for hangers and drawers installed on one side and office shelving and drawers on the other. Great place for the occasional 3rd guest!

Just helped my son assemble a murphy bed from breda beds. They only make murphy beds. The material is high density particle board laminated with a veneer. The construction is excellent. Everything fit exactly right, no re-drilliing or forcing. The assembled structure looks very nice, operates smoothly and feels substantial. My wife and I slept on it and it felt quite secure. Some things to consider. The total weight (queen sized) is 525 pounds. Individual pieces are under 50 pounds. Assembly is a 2 person job. Attaching the springs took some finagling and was not as easy as it appeared in the video. Put the springs onto the hinge mechanism BEFORE installing the mechanism onto the panel. The door is 2 pieces that are held together by a metal frame and some metal rails. That assembly weighs about 100 pounds or so and is assembled flat on the floor (you will need a square drill bit not provided. I think it was a number 4.) That assembly is tilted upright and then must be lifted about 8 inches and then lowered into the holder on the the back part of the wall unit. Not too bad other than the weight. It took my son and I the entire day (10AM until 7PM). You may also want to buy a piece of 1inch foam insulation (1 4x8 sheet just works on the queen size). This can be carved to fit between the metal rails that hold the front door pieces together to give your mattress a firmer foundation. Lots of useful information including pictures, assembly videos and how to measure on their website. Read all the way through the instructions BEFORE you start assembling. Also note that the online video does the assembly in a slightly different order than in the instructions.

If you do not have a strong assistant, I would recommend hiring a handyman or ordering with assembly (I think they charge about $250).

The ones I’ve seen are bulky though imo. They take up a good amount of floor space. Sofa bed is at least useable when closed.

Depending on the height of the "cabinet bed", it can possibly be used practically as a craft-type table.

We considered a Murphy bed and looked around for a second-hand one. The second-hand Murphy beds can be a lot less expensive, but you'll probably have to carefully help take it apart and then put it back together in your home. (It would likely be worth it to save the money.)

We went with a day bed with pop-up trundle in our "3rd bedroom". The guest room is finely furnished and fairly dedicated for guests, and since additional visitors who would need a bed is minimal each year, providing the day bed is quite adequate and keeps the room more open for other purposes ("office" for us). The everyday setting with day bed and trundle is very comfortable for seating, TV, and naps, and the twin size allows for a combined king size bed (with trundle open) as needed.

Having said all that, I have seen very lovely rooms with Murphy beds.

I have my office/craft room desk/workspace on one side, my husband has his side as his office (built-ins) and we have a queen sofa bed and nightstand with drawers for company. The other bedroom is solely a guest bedroom with this space being overflow but still usable by us on a daily basis. The Murphy bed just wouldn't cut it.

Had a queen Murphy bed with cabinets installed last month in our 3rd bedroom and couldn’t be happier. Researched all above mentioned options before taking the plunge and found this option best suited our needs. Requires less space than the other options allowing the room to be extremely versatile. It basically comes down to budget and personal preference. Best of luck in your decision.

I ordered mine from Wall Beds and they are twin beds. Choose your own shade of wood and accessories. There is a light over each bed, and cabinets in between the beds. You wouldn’t know they were beds and it frees up the whole bedroom. If you would like to see them call me.
