Thanks for the heads up! I'm a sucker for anything by John Sandford - love his Lucas Davenport books, his Virgil Flowers books and his Kidd & LuEllen books plus his standalone books (even the SciFi one he co-authored with Ctein). The guy just spins great yarns. Suddenly realized that I haven't gotten around to reading his Singular Menace novels. Well, I guess we've all got time to read now, don't we?

We sure do. And the Sumter County Library has pushed the due dates back to early May 2020.

I'll buy it on the day it's released, and will probably be done with it in two days. This guy can write, and I've read everything he's ever written (that I know of). I agree about the sci-fi book. I loved it too.

I was surprised to see his name on a SciFi novel, more surprised to see it at a Costco and even more surprised when I picked it up to buy it that it was an autographed copy. Not quite the same as having the author sign it in front of you like the several other autographed books I have, but still pretty cool.

If you were to recommend one book by Sandford to somebody who wants to give him a try, what would it be?

I would start with the first Lucas Davenport book-- Rules of Prey. Rules of Prey (http://www.johnsandford.org/prey01.html)

About a third of the way through Masked Prey. It is a little slow.

I would heartily agree with that choice. Start with the first one because then (counting the new one) you will have 29 more left to feed your new Lucas Davenport addiction!!

I agree, I always read series in chronological order and Sandford is one of my favorites. I will say, Sandford's writing has improved over time. So in a way, his first book is not his best book, but if you like it, you know things only get better.

I agree with the above posts about John Sandford's books...read every one and loved them all. After you read one then you wait another year for the next new one so read Michael Connelly's books in between. He writes the Harry Bosch and Mickey Haller (the Lincoln Lawyer) books and now has added Det Renee Ballard series. There are a few others too. Excellent reading. Sandford and Connelly are the best.

Yes and his nickname is very amusing but not printable on Talk of the Villages.
Some of John Sandford's books go into detail about the U of Minnesota where both Virgil Flowers and Lucas Davenport went if my memory serves correct. If you want to read the stories in chronological order, you have to start with the Prey series, then read the Virgil Flowers books and the Kidd and LuEllen books intermixed with them. These are NOT three separate "universes". Both Virgil and Kidd and LuEllen get introduced in different Prey novels and the characters appear off and on in other Prey novels. It's best to just read ALL of these series in the order they were published.
By the way, I finished Masked Prey a couple weeks ago and it's another good one.
