When is the morning rush hour for Atlanta? How early should you plan to drive through there while heading north or west to avoid the traffic jam that sounds like a typical day in Atlanta. https://mydrive.tomtom.com/en_gb/

We always try to hit ATL between 12-1PM and avoid 285 like the plague.

Probably a good recommendation but I have given up driving after midnight. To get there at 4AM would mean leaving TV at 10PM.

Never. I must have hit it on a bad day but it made NYC look like a ride in the country. We were headed to Columbus to a boot camp graduation and added an extra day in just in case. Well if you haven't experienced it then it's sorta hard to describe. Just like coming thru Washington DC when a Redskins game is over. NEVER AGAIN.

Agree with this if you can't go on the weekend. Leave TV about 7:00 AM.
You can use your Sun-Pass in the HOV lane. Don't know what the charge is.

There is never any really "good" time to drive through ATL. However, do as another poster said, "Avoid I-285 like the plague," if you can possibly help it. Driving through ATL is much more preferable than around it. Trust me on this! We tried to avoid the city 7-9 am and 2-7 pm, as it seems heaviest with commuters. Good luck...and driving through on Christmas Day might not be bad idea. Just a suggestion!

Before we became full time Villagers we were in northwest Georgia and had to go through Atlanta every trip here.
In my opinion the best time to hit Atlanta is 11am - 1pm. We would usuall leave TV at 5am and hit Atlanta around 11, so if you leave at 7am you should be good.

NEVER - but if you must weekends are preferable or probably 11-2 weekdays. And I agree absolutely avoid the loop and stay in the HOV lanes.

There is no charge for the HOV lanes....only have two or more people in the car.
After the morning rush hour or after 8 PM.
As others have stated the weekend especially Saturday.
I have also found over the years that Wedneday is a lighter traffic day.

Airline pilots have a saying, When you die and are headed to heaven, you'll have a lay over in Atlanta. For me since I no longer can drive all night, I go out of my way to avoid Atlanta. I don't care if it adds another day to the trip. Going to the mid west I'd rather go thru Birmingham even though the GPS wants me to go thru Atlanta.

I hit Atlanta between 1am to 4 am. The lights are pretty and no one try's to run you over and plenty of time to get in the right lane

We try to drive through Atlanta on the weekend to miss rush hour traffic. The only concern is if they have a sporting event.

Our strategy was to go just south of Atlanta on a Saturday night and drive straight thru very early Sunday morning. No problem!

We leave TV 5:30am and go straight through Atlanta on I75 in the HOV lane---a piece of cake after driving in Chicago.

Yes stay off the beltway. 75 all the way through. The DC beltway taught me a lesson over the years. We prefer late at night or very early morning hours.

I have friends travelling to various places but perhaps going through Atlanta just hope they or other friends of their's look at TOTV.
I was in DC in May 2015 and remember the Beltway traffic. We often took the train into the city from VA.
