Why do men do this??? John McCain..get rid of the combover. When it gets windy, this huge hunk of hair flies all around , sticks up in the air and looks horrible. Men, you are beautiful. Cut off that hank of hair. Bald shows us you have a lot of testosterone. You are a manly man.
I've seen men that must have 6-8 inches of hair that they wrap around their pate. Then it gets glued down with product and look completely unnatural. Want to look sexier, men? Cut off that chunk of wraparound hair. :)
This is not meant to offend anyone and is just my opinion.

Sam, I completely agree with you but on the other hand, can you imagine what the men would have to say about us ladies for the sake of looking young & beautiful?
We perm our hair,we color our hair, we relax out hair, we streak our hair, we highlight our hair, just to name a few not to mention the unmentionable things we do to the rest of our bodies in order to look sexy & beautiful???? (just my opinion)! LOL

I agree, Nonie. It's not always pretty on women either, though. I see women with way to much makeup or dressing like they are 16 again. That said, it still doesn't make a combover look good. Tell me one man that you know who looks good with a patewrapper then the Brlycreme or whatever the h you need to hold it in place. Think how freeing it would be for the man to get rid of that thing. And the Donald??? He's just such a pompous arse he thinks he looks good in anything. Furthermore, his bad hair is like his trademark. That doesn't make him any prettier, either.
We can be old and wrinkled and can't help that. Combovers can be helped.
I know many men of a certain age do this. It doesn't mean we don't like you...it's just the hair.

comb-over is about the worst. I dated a fellow who had the c/o and would tell him how terrible it looked. He wouldn't budge from the style; just couldn't take the baldness, I guess. Geez, we even had to ride in the car with the windows always closed so his hair wouldn't fall to one side and look so ugly. Needless to say, that relationship didn't last long other than he was a classmate and brother of a dear friend. My friend understood when I broke it off with him. His personality was like his hair......wierd.

Sam, :agree:
Bald can be sexy. Combovers are never, ever sexy. :dontknow: Who do they think they're kidding?
And for Donald Trump, how could he think anyone would ever marry him for anything but his money?? He is such a pompous ass (but a rich one). IMHO.

Good point Sam - I agree completely. My personal forehead was moving north at a rapid rate several years ago when my lovely Linda told me she thought I would look nice in a short haircut. So I had my haircutter use clippers - No. 1.5 on the side and No. 4 on the top, and have never looked back. I love my short white hair now. But come to find out, the real reason that Linda convinced me to change my look was that I had developed a combover without really noticing, and she found a way to "fix" the problem without me even knowing she was doing it! Great gal . . . .

Collie, I just know you look mahvelous, dahling!!!! ;) Way to go lovely Linda!!
Hey Nonie
I don't get the comb over thing either. For one thing how do you get the part to work just over the ear? How come they always part it on the left side? Maybe they think you won't notice or maybe there just blocking the sun or maybe they just don't have a mirror.
Personally one of my nicknames is FLUF ( fat little ugly fu*%#er...er fella) and I just get over it. Look at it this way , they can buy a wig but I'll never be 6'2".

Don't know which is worse, a comb over or a really bad toupee.
I had a funny experience years ago with a male hair client.
When hair transplants first came out, he decided to get a couple of rows along the front to improve his hairline that was just starting to recede.
It was my first experience cutting a hair transplant. Looked pretty good as he wore it down across his forehead. If you lifted it up tho, the plugs looked like doll hair, very obvious. :yikes:
But what happened was his REAL hair continued to recede, so he started developing a bald patch behind the rows of plugs. I had to do a weird haircut to try to hide that.
Of course eventually he had to get more rows, and more rows and more rows................
He may still be getting them........

There is nothing attractive in any way with a c/o. I personally think bald is kinda' cute. Too bad it isn't in style for women or I would be in line having my head shaved..hee! hee!

Bald is definitely much better. Every time I see Donald Trump, I cringe. He could certainly afford something better.
So many young men are getting their heads shaved today. My granddaughter's boyfriend is 22, and he shaved his head. On a recent cruise, we saw many young men (several from England) who wore the bald head look. One, who sat at a table with us was so gorgeous that my eyes were almost falling out. ha, ha My husband was busy admiring the wife (who was a stunner).
One time an ex-boss of mine got a RED wig. That was the hardest time I ever had not to burst out in laughter when I saw him. He looked like a clown.
My vote is go bald.

Im not disagreeing with you by any means, the combovers do look positively awful. I think shaving their heads is a much better idea, looks a million times better then the combovers,I just wish bald would come into style for women. Now wouldnt that make our lives easier? ::)

I think bald men are sexy!!!!!!!!! When they have nice eyes and a well shaped head they should go bald whether they need to or not.
I agree that bald looks good on certain people. But after going through what I did with my wife's battle with the big C, I cant see anyone with a bald head without thinking CEMO.

Benj, Chemo is a horrible thing for someone to go through. Women are not typically associated with baldness and it's startles us to see a bald woman. The assumption is that she is going through chemo. I am hoping that she won her battle with that terrible beast cancer. Best wishes to her.
BTW... I didn't expect you, as a married man, to find bald men sexy. ;) ;)

Wikipedia definition - A comb over or combover is a hairstyle worn by bald or balding men in which the hair on one side of the head is grown long and then combed over the bald ...
If I read this correctly it simply means... These men are in denial. They can't accept they are bald or are going all bald! They use the little bit of hair they've got to make themselves feel better, but instead they look terrible.
I see this problem no different than than ladies not accepting life changes. Some ladies walk around like they do to feel better, but instead they look horrible!!!
In my opinion... What may be the best option for a balding man is to stop hiding it and embrace it. Go for the gusto and either get a very tight trim or shave it all off. So men, If you’re thinking of taking the leap and shaving your head..., I assure you, that shaved head look is back and is acceptable for men today. You really will get many good comments and complements on it.
By the way, for the Donald Trump fans.... See the Donald Trump: The Art of the Comb-over

My son is 34 and shaved his head about 14 years ago. He's been shaving it ever since. He was self conscious about his early receding and thinning hair and was convinced girls his age were turned off by that. So wallah, the hair came off and it did so much for his self esteem.
My husband has toyed with the idea of shaving his head but can't get the nerve up just yet. Maybe someday...

I have to agree- comb overs are bad! I guess everyone has to accept (or not accept) aging in their own way but bald is definitely better than the comb over (especially after stepping out on a windy day!)

It was the time of "skinheads" and that did worry us that he would be thought of as that. But he had the "I don't care" attitude. He was too embarrassed about his early balding.

My sons lovely wavy hair began to thin in his late twenties, he just cut it short ,and each year it gets shorter, He will not go to shaving it totally but it is almost there.
Comb -over is on a par with a toupee...I honestly can't decide which is worse. They are both a bad solution to baldness. IMHO :barf:
There are some women who look really spectacular in very short hair. I met one last week. She had been a career woman all her life and of course had her hair styled and in later years as the grey came in, colored. When she retired she had it cut very short and allowed it to go grey, actually white...it is stunning. :)
suzy my wife of 34 years lost her fight with cancer. It's 3 years now and I'm still destroyed. This site and tv web page help because it gives me a place to keep connected with my new life I dream about. I can't tell you why but I know tv is where I need to be. With the housing market as bad as it is here in Colorado I'm afraid my dream of living in tv might turn into a fantasy. To me bald is just a bad memory.

I've gone the short route for 10 years when it started to receed. I have coworkers who do the comb over thing and it is a complete denial thing. It was one of the best things I've ever done, no need to dry it and style it etc. Just towel it and go!
Towel? I use a wash cloth!

I agree 100%. It doesn't matter whether you are a man or woman, comb overs just don't do it. I had both an uncle and my older brother that insisted they weren't going bald. I think my brother's comb over at its peek hung to his chest on one side of his head, if he got his head wet. Which he didn't do too often in public. As for me, as soon as I could see a little scalp, I started going to the barber and asked for a # 2 clipper on the sides and # 3 on top, and never looked back. And, oh yes, that wash cloth feels so good on my head. Every day, when I get up, I look in the mirror and say... Lord, your a good looking man, and look at that head of fuzz you have.

I just read this entire thread.
Why do they do it? Nobody likes to see it. I guess denial has to be the explanation.
I have never fully recovered from what I saw once on a cruise. I was standing on a high deck from which I looked down at the top of some guy's head. Well, this guy had completed his comb over by painting the top of his head black with something that looked a lot like shoe polish. It was a sight to behold.
You know, for some reason, I feel compelled to make one of those shameless little confessions that I make here from time to time. I just logged on and I am getting ready to log right off so I won't hear you making fun of me.
And now, I just gotta tellya. You know what I do like? Well, sort of. Well, maybe more than sort of. . .
I like it when bald guys have gray hair and they just go right with the bald on top thing and would not dream of combing over but then they grow a gray ponytail.

So barb, who said Boomer was classy?
I bought Mr. Boomer 50 shares of HDI for his 50th birthday. They later changed the symbol to HOG. It went up, split, went up again. Loved the ride. We got the annual report which was a thing of beauty. Heck, half those guys at Sturgis are CPA's.
Sold the stock in 2006 to put the cash in one of his expensive hobby funds. And he sure would love a Harley.
(I keep trying to get Mr. Boomer to get an inexpensive hobby, like perhaps carving polar bears out of soap. But it's not working. You know, he could at least grow a ponytail.)
Girls, darn it. I am having too much fun with this ponytail thing. But I have to get some sleep.
Barb, just give it some thought. ;)

Boomer, you are far from the only one! I love it when a balding, graying guy makes a little ponytail with what's left in the back. It's pretty sexy. From the front he looks like a regular guy, then from the back you see the ponytail, and get a little kick that he's maybe a cool guy too!
BTW I hate comb-overs and toupees too!

PJ,
You summed it up. He has to be bald or balding. The hair has to be gray or graying.
I also think it's just fine if he has a little bit of a belly.
You know, last night it was almost midnight when I shamelessly confessed this little weakness of mine. And I really was surprised at the other confessions that were brought forth. Maybe we need a thread called "Midnight Confessions." (like didya see where Brightspot is in love with Willie Nelson.) I usually don't make it 'til midnight. Probably a good thing. Would not want to reveal all my secrets.
BTW, when I took Mr. Boomer his coffee this morning, I brought up this ponytail thing again.
But he just laughed like he always does.

You know, I am not so sure that I always associate the mystique of the ponytail with a motorcycle. I think sometimes it could also be that whole artist kind of thing. And there's a bunch of other stuff, too. Oh, who knows?
I do intend to keep trying to interest Mr. Boomer in this new look.
But maybe I had better be careful. He could end up way too cute.

OMG! I love Willie Nelson, too. My son-in-law got me interested in him. They danced to one of his songs for their wedding. Then, Willie played a concert near our house. I ordered the tickets as soon as they came out. You couldn't choose seats - only sections. When our tickets came, we were in the front row. It was wonderful!!!!!!! We waited afterward to shake his hand and got a couple autographs. I also snuck a kiss!

...along with Jimmy Buffett (no ponytail) and Dwight Yoakum (no ponytail). Now this may sound strange but I only like Dwight when he's wearing that cowboy hat of his. Once he takes it off, well, he doesn't do much for me. I'm a little weird.

Comb-overs to me fall into the same category as too tight, too short, too sexy clothes, combined with sagging knees and underarm, over the bra, back bulge.
A desperate attempt to hold on to what once was, instead of accepting what is. It spells lack of self esteem and no mirror at home, to me.
As for Willie, we have tickets to see him later this month. Tom is a huge fan and I like him too.
