Default Paper Shredding Event for Humane Societies

Mark your calendars for Saturday, March 22 for a special event to support the Humane Society/SPCA of Sumter County and Leesburg Humane Society with a very unique event. There will be two industrial paper shredding trucks in the parking lot of the Buffalo Ridge Animal Hospital from 8:30 a.m. to 11:30 so folks can securely shred all their unwanted paperwork containing personal information. PLEASE COME OUT AND SUPPORT THIS EVENT EVEN IF YOU DON'T HAVE ANY PAPER TO SHRED! 100 PERCENT OF YOUR DONATION WILL GO TO THE HUMANE SOCIETIES. No binders or bulk commercial items will be accepted.

Please respond to this notice if you have any questions.

I saw that notice when I visited Buffalo Ridge on February 21, 2014 for a follow-up appointment for my dog. Looks like a worthy cause.

Thanks for the reminder, Nipper! We participated in the shredding fundraiser last year, and plan to do it again this year. It's a great way to get rid of all the old paper clogging up your file cabinets!

Do you shred the paper yourself, or get to witness all your paper being shredded? I have some older tax documents and papers that no longer need to be kept, but due to the nature of the documents I would insist to seeing the shredding with my own eyes. I have too much to do it with my shredder.
If not, I will just do a little bit at a time, but a program like this would help out a needy cause and also help me out too.

Pa & Giggi, You don't do the shredding yourself, and you don't witness your specific papers being shredded.

When HoneyBoy took our bags of papers there were many cars lined up at a trailer for a commercial shredding company in the parking lot. The workers tossed the bags into bins so they could be loaded into the trailer. The line of cars moved fairly quickly.

Remember the good old days when we would all drive to the post office around midnight on April 15th? The cars would be lined up & the postal workers would take your IRS envelope & throw it into a bin -- there was almost a celebratory feel to the 'tax parade'? The shredding event at Buffalo Ridge was a little like that. All I can tell you is that it worked for us. We were happy to have all our sensitive papers shredded & happy to help out the Humane Society. : Thumbup:

PS: If you have an account with Smith Barney they also have a shredding event, complete with food & drinks. They also use a commercial shredding company's trailer in the parking lot.

Thanks for your answer uujudy. I think I will shred a few papers at a time here that contain SS# and all else can go to be shredded.

All paper is shredded on site. Here's how it works: Papers are dumped into large bins. The bins are lifted into the truck shredder and shredded. If you want to wait and watch the bin where your papers have been dumped, you can. Thank you for your interest.

I attended last year and it was very well organized. Was greatful that I could shred old papers with confidential information. Thank you for this great opportunity. Will you have adoptable animals at this event?

There will not be animals on site for adoption this year during the Shredding Event. Unfortunately, parking is limited because Buffalo Ridge is an emergency animal hospital, and we must reserve parking spots for patients.

I have attended this shredding event for three years and last time the line moved quickly and the whole procedure was very well organized. I was there when they finished and it was reassuring to observe that the people in charge watched until the last paper in the last bin had been shredded. I'm gathering all my old tax, credit card, and bank papers -- staples and all. It's nice to know that our donations will go to such a worthy cause. Will this service be offered every year in March?

Thanks for the comment Bar. Plans are to continue this event every March to help support homeless animals in Sumter and Lake counties. Last year, thanks to our generous community, we were able to give the humane societies $7200. Many people came out just to make a donation or to drop off dog and cat food.

Thank you for bringing this up. I forgot that Buffalo Ridge Animal Hospital has a new location. The shredding event is at the original location off of 466 between Red Lobster and Golden Corral. It's in back of Tire Choice.

I plan to be there with my tub of documents to shred. For those that have supported this in the past, what do you donate? Cash? A bag of dog or cat food? Litter? Pee pads? I have not participated in this event in the past, so appreciate any suggestion.

I think the humane societies appreciate any and all support. However, since we split all cash donation between Sumter Co. and Leesburg humane societies, I think cash is most appreciated. Last year folks who came out donated more than $7,000. You can write a check for tax purposes. Just make it out to Humane Society. And thank you all for your support and generosity. See you Saturday. It's going to be a great day!
