Buy the brushes --easy repair--remove the starter, blow it clean with compressed air, install new brushes , place sand paper between brushes and andcommutator(hope i remember the right name) rotate commutator to seat the brushes-- you show be good to go--no brainer repair-when I was in business my electricians used to replace brushes in their drill motors

Can you tell us who was trying to rob you? Replacing brushes is easy.

This topic was discussed about a year ago.
2015 Yamaha gas cart high voltage The question is... Do you have a charging or starting problem and that was the diagnosis, or were you just told you needed new brushes during a tune-up? You're wise to ask around as you're doing... |

I have replaced my brushes two times on a 2013 Yamaha Gas I bought from TV. I have 20K miles on my cart. The job is not that hard and takes about two hours. Hitachi makes the starter/generator for my cart, model Gsb107 – 06K. These numbers can be found on the starter itself. Amazon carries this unit for about $110. The first time was approx. 2 years ago at which time I replaced the brushes for $12. The second time was just last month and when I replaced STARTER MOTOR BRUSH HOLDER ASSY which included the brushes. This cost $21 and was a little harder to replace. I don’t know how long this will last. The part of the armature where the brushes ride is quite concave from wear. I suspect this is what made the brushes I installed two years ago wear out so fast. One can replace the armature and brushes for about $70 (Amazon) but at that point I’d opt to replace the whole unit. Note the starter/generator will work in both directions – clockwise and counter clockwise. Pay careful attention to the where the wires go as this what controls which way it turns.

If the cost is 432 dollars, that's a new OEM starter, not a rebuild. This is something we see a lot of as most places just sell a new starter when only new brushes are required.
Buying the cheap aftermarket starters and your asking for trouble. As another poster found out, buying cheap starter brushes, you find that they wear out quick, a good set of brushes will last 10 years if the starter is rebuilt correct., Using the cheaper ones wears out the commutator and instead of saving money, you end up spending more. |

I just happen to be on Amazon looking for a repair manual for my Yamaha GC and noticed brushes for $12, and replacement starter/generator for $120, I did not note year or model number.
